Born in Tokyo in 1966, Soichiro Shimizu studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he lived and worked before moving to Bangkok. His practice explores accumulation and removal, irreversible decisions, material transformation and the passage of time through painting, engraving and layered surfaces. He builds surfaces through repeated acts of accumulation, then sands, abrades, engraves or exposes them so that what remains becomes a record of decisions, accidents and material change. Light and the viewer’s movement alter the visibility of polished, matte, metallic and exposed layers. Shimizu’s work is held in public and private collections including Dib Bangkok, MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum in Chiang Mai, Sony Headquarters in Tokyo, Sony Plaza in New York and Shu Uemura.
